[DANCE] The Practice of Badui Dance with Four Japanese and Malaysian Students

Malangrejo is the one of some villages that still keep the BADUI DANCE exist even these days. The community does their practice every Saturday night. They also often to perform the dance on many events. 

This week practice is little bit different since it was held in Tuesday night (8/11) instead of Saturday night because we're welcoming four international students from Japan and Malaysia: Tomoaki, Mariko, Yukari, and Winnie.

The people showed their enthusiasm to show the Badui Dance by giving their best work in the practice that night, hoping the dance can be well-known even in Japan and Malaysia.

The international students also joined the practice and did their best. They said it was so amazing, since the dancers can dance in 3 hours continually without taking rest. Not only they dancers who made them so amazed, but so many people of Malangrejo gathered to see and support both of dancers and musicians.

MALANGREJO'S MERTI BHUMI

Friday, August 21st, 2015
19.00 – 22.00        : Taking Holy Water
The holy water will be taken from three of the oldest wells in each hamlet in Malangrejo, namely Sono, Malangrejo, and Nglarang. The holy water will be used for watering the trees that will be planted during the carnival.

Saturday, August 22nd , 2015
08.00 – 12.00        : Kenduri
Kenduri is tradition of banquet food to commemorate an event that is done jointly. The guests sat around the food that is served then praying it together. Then after the event is over, the food is taken home by the guests.

13.00 – 15.00        : Kirab
Kirab is carnival or parade. It will feature a procession of people dressed in accordance with their respective background and also there will be ‘gunungan’, i.e. mountains of vegetables and fruits that will be chased by the citizens at the end of the parade. The parade will walk around Malangrejo. Then, it will be ended with the planting of trees namely teak, resin, and jackfruit.

15.30 – 17.30        : Performing Art I
In this performing art, there will be performance of Malangrejo’s culture, such as Badui and Jathilan. Badui dance is one of traditional dance bringing a story about war. It symbolizes a group of soldier in training. Jathilan is a dramatical dance tells story about a war between two hussars. Sometimes, it is brought based on some Javanese legendary story (Babad Tanah Jawi) such as cerita Panji, Arya Penangsang, Majapahit story, and many more. 

19.30 – 21.30         : Performing Art II
In this performing art II there will be art and music performance from children, teenagers, and elder.

22.00 – 03.00        : Kethoprak
Ketoprak is a traditional drama performed by a group of art and displayed in a scene by taking a historical story or fairy tale punctuated by buffoonery and songs accompanied by traditional musical instruments of Java.

[ART] YOGYAKARTA CLASSICAL DANCE

Yogyakarta's Classical Dance was created by the Kingdom's Artists long time ago and mentioned as one of legendary art heritage. Nowadays, the Classical Dance is still exist as one of Javanese original traditional dance since a lot people want to learn how to dance it, but they have to more patient since the moves are slowly and elegant.

In Malangrejo, there is group of Javanese Classical Dance that routinely practice once a week. They perform the dance on many events, such as Merti Dusun, etc.

Tari klasik  gaya Yogyakarta  dibuat oleh seniman – seniman keraton zaman dulu. Banyak yang menilainya sebagai warisan seni bermutu tinggi. Tari klasik sampai hari ini masih lestari karena masih ada yang tertarik mempelajarinya. Belajar tarian klasik gaya Yogyakarta harus ekstra sabar karena gerakan dan rangkaian tarinya rumit. 

Kesenian tari klasik sudah tidak asing lagi dikenal masyarakat, di dusun Malangrejo juga melakukan latihan bersama tari klasik. Latihan ini dilakukan setiap hari minggu di rumah pak Lurah.

[ART] JATHILAN DANCE

Jathilan is a dramatical dance tells story about a war between two hussars. Sometimes, it is brought based on some Javanese legendary story (Babad Tanah Jawi) such as cerita Panji, Arya Penangsang, Majapahit story, and many more.

While performing, the dancers bring an artificial bamboo horse known as Kuda Kepang, riding it as a great soldier acoompanied with Javanese Traditional Gamelan music.

More characters appear on the dance such as masked dancers which is figured the antagonists, such as Buto, Rasekso (Raksasa), Genderuwo, Barongan, and entertainer figures known as Penthul and Tembem.

[BAHASA INDONESIA]
Kesenian yang telah lama dikenal oleh masyarakat Yogyakarta dan juga sebagian Jawa Tengah. Jathilan juga dikenal dengan nama kuda lumping, kuda kepang, ataupun jaran kepang. Didalam pertunjukkan jathilan, para penari menceritakan cerita tertentu yang hendak disampaikan, maka akan ada instrumen lain, yaitu penabuh gamelan, perias, dan pawang. Pawang disini merupakan sosok yang bertanggung jawab untuk mengendalikan jalannya pertunjukkan dan menyembuhkan penari yang kerasukan.

Warga masyarakat pada umumnya senang dengan kesenian ini, karena sangat menghibur. Tidak lain juga dengan masyarakat Malangrejo, dimana kesenian jathilan ini masih hidup ditengah masyarakat dan sering dilakukan pertunjukkan untuk acara – acara tertentu.

[ART] BADUI DANCE

Badui dance is one of traditional dance bringing a story about war. It symbolizes a group of soldier in training. This dance is using two rows and circular line composition to assign the dancers position. This dance actually used as Islamic missionary endeavor (dakwah) to convey about teaching of Islam to local people, so they can understand the Islam in a very easy and interesting way.
These days, Badui dance has already become a typical traditional art in Malangrejo and got attract visitors who coming to visit the village.

The instruments using for this dance is Genderang or Tambur (kind of drums), Terbang Genjreng, and Jedor. Sometimes, whistle also used to give a sign during the performance such as in the beginning, changing position, etc
